Suffolk to change signs on County Road 39

Speaking of English (capital E).... "aren't" is a contraction, and "census" is singular." Dec 9, 08 9:39 AM

Mariners dominate in rematch with rival

Stacie, this is not an article about "bruno." It's an aritcle about the Mariners defeating Hampton Bays fair and square. They were able to do this so resoundingly because the Bayman's star player is out for the season. Those are the facts. This maybe painful for you and surely disappointing for the boys and the Hampton Bays team, but that's life.
And when a team quickly falls to a losing record after an injury to a single player, any reasonable person would surely conclude that, yes, one player can make a team.

No smooth sailing for Mecox Bay sailing group

Stories like this leave me shaking my head and longing for the old days before all sense of community was sucked from the rich summer folk who built there huge houses in places they refer to as "Bridge" and "South" and East."
That a group of city folk would hire a Melville attorney who then argues with a straight face that sailing club with 16 sunfish sail boats could somehow "destroy" a public resource is so absurd it defies comprehension.
This attitude is so enraging to me--and I'm sure anyone else who grew up out here--and knows anything about the old "yacht" club. a scrappy shack from which local kids learned to sail and had fun on the bay without "destroying" anything or bothering anyone. My goodness, these goons make it sound like the end of Bay Lane is going to look like the King Kullen parking lot! If there were ever more than 3 cars down there at any one time I'd be shocked.
GET A LIFE!" Sep 16, 10 4:57 PM

James I'm not sure what site plan your looking at, but the plan submitted by the Yacht club doesn not call for creating or paving to accomodate any additional parking. Cars would simply park on the roadside or at the end of the road as they've done for years. And the 6,000 sqft that will be cleared is the same footprint that existed there before it all got overgrown a few years ago. It's not "new" clearing. You and the other uniformered NIMBYs living on that street should lighten up. Who knows, maybe your kids could make some new friends and learn how to sail. Could even be an activity you could share with them." Sep 17, 10 1:29 PM

O.K. this is my last comment, since none of you seem to have actually LOOKED at the site plan.
1) Your memory of the club as it existed before is exactly what is envisioned now.
2) It's 6,000 sqft, not 6,000 acres. And included in that area is the club shack, the side of the road and the same area alongside the shack (that is overgrown now) where the boat racks used to be and will be located again under the new plan.
3) There is no parking lot planned for the area.
4) It's not an exclusive club for "30 special" familles as Mr. White contends above. He makes it sound like The Bridge or the Shinnecock Golf Links! This "club" is the antihesis of excusive. That's the point. Show up, store your boat, learn to sail. Have fun.

The Press News Group To Offer Premium Membership Subscriptions

Guys, we’re talking about spending 75 cents a week here. That’s about 5 sips of coffee. Is 27east.com the worlds best organized website? No. Is it pretty damn good considering it’s coming from a local weekly paper? Yes. You guys can sit here and whine and stomp your feet about “having to think twice” about paying for the convenience of getting local news here. But when you consider the alternatives, I for one, am happy to pay a few cents a week to support a company that is based locally, employs local people, gives back to the community, AND provides amazing coverage of local news and events. At the end of the day, you get what you pay for, and if any of you believe that adage is different for the information business you’re delusional. " Feb 26, 11 3:32 PM

Remembering A Night Of Tragedy

I couldn't agree more. HOW DARE THEY try to extract a whopping 75 cents a week from hardworking guys like us who probably spend twice that on our daily morning coffee. Where do these guys get off expecting us consumers of their original content to pay such an exorbitant fee to read it! The owner and the staff of locals he employs to produce these stories should be hunted down and shot!" Mar 10, 11 7:04 PM

Southampton Ambulance Districts Eager To Look At Third-Party Billing

I, too have no recollection of of third party biiling ever having been attempted in Southampton, and I have been a member of a local volunteer fire department and ambulance company for most of my adult. I think Crow's Nest is getting a past memory confused with something else. And I believe that the doom and gloom scenarios he outlines above are way overblown. Most of the bigger town vol ambulance corps have had paid responders integrated with the volunteer staff for years and it has worked great. The good thing about this initiative is that it helps reduce our tax bills by shifting the cost of the service to those who actually use it. Those that don't have insurance can just be written off. In this volunteer's humble opinion its win-win." Sep 26, 11 12:19 PM

You just can't make this stuff up.
The poor judgement on the part of the police is staggering. Lets let the guy flee the state/country, and then we'll release his name and photo. Brilliant strategy. Cops now say they may release his photo/identity "soon" Who gives a crap at this point? The guy is gone!!
Nice work." Jul 20, 12 12:21 PM

Southampton Village Volunteer Ambulance Open House Slated For Saturday

First of all, thank you for making a donation to the SVA. But the ambulance company that is seeking to build a new HQ is the SVVA. They cover the Village of Southampton. The SVA, which helped your son, is a different organization and covers the unincorporated areas of Southampton, Water Mill and North Sea. Yes, I know it's confusing." Aug 17, 12 11:01 AM

Study Says Fresh Market Would Not Cause A Significant Impact On The Environment Or Traffic

In the history of the town, did a consultant ever file an impact study or traffic report that did not validate the point of view of the developer or govt entity that paid for it? The county is now widening Co. Rd 39 to move the East End's worst bottleneck right to the doorstep of the new supermarket, and still this project, like everyone before it--regardless of size-- will have "no significant impact."
Startling." Sep 5, 12 11:19 AM

Fowl Play: Water Mill Turkey Found With Its Legs Bound

Well it's an animal story so there are sure to be a gazillion comments. But I for one loved seeing that turkey plodding around the Water Mill green, and had no problem stopping for his occasional forays across the street. For me Jake was one of those eccentric characters that used to give this area so much of its charm before it was over run by so many humorless, egocentric morons who don't even know which "Hampton" their Farrell house is located in. Bound in painter's tape and hauled away to parts unknown. Every local should be able to relate to this poor bird's fate. " Jul 2, 13 10:40 AM

27east.com To Implement Metered Subscription Plan

umm, Patch just laid off most of it's staff as part of a "restructuring" related to their recent sale to a vulture firm. Beginning of the end for that venture, and not surprising either.
Covering the news in depth and broadly is expensive. We are blessed to have some of the best weekly newspapers in america right here in our backyard.
As others on this board have noted, $10 a quarter is a pittance (80 cents a WEEK for heaven's sake) to help keep companies like this in business.
As with everything else, you get what you pay for. Unfortunately people take companies like the Press and the Star for granted and don't realize that between the two of them they probably employ 70-100 locals who work their asses off to produce actual news--not rewrites of press releases.
I for one am happy to pay a few pennies a day for solid useful information about my community. " Feb 1, 14 3:21 PM
