Extra police patrols for Westhampton Beach St. Patrick's Day Parade

Three-car crash closes Montauk Highway in Westhampton

The Press organization has done an admirable job in filing fresh news stories, when they can, from Montauk to Manorville. They are making great strides in transforming an print media publication into a timely Web presence.

This transition is not easy for a small company, and it is expensive, so kudos to them IMO. Any unhappiness about the timeliness of news here at 27east, if genuine, should be accompanied by a donation to The Press to encourage them to do more online coverage. Kind of a "put your money where your mouth is" kind of a thing.

I recall an article from last year about the windsurfing board that was found on the beach in Bridgehampton I think on a Friday afternoon, and the coverage was updated often until the owner called in to report that he was OK. Nice work.

Thanks again to The Press for outstanding coverage here.

PS -- Have you noticed that weekly newspaper to our east has recently "Star"ted to add daily updates to their home page during the week for breaking stories? The are way behind The Press in this regard IMO." Mar 27, 10 5:54 PM

PS2 -- Comment above is a general one. It is clear to these eyes that Frank Wheeler was indeed complimenting the "real time' coverage." Mar 27, 10 5:57 PM

Fairway Restaurant closed after 20 years

Voiding the Heaney/EH contract with Wankel may be expensive and time-consuming IMO. Let's make sure the current SH/EH Town Boards don't continue this pattern of possible cronyism.

Patronage at the revamped restaurant this summer will make it or break it.

Speak with your dollars, and picket signs. ("Yank the Wankel?")

If business is lousy this summer, Dan Murray may be able to take the refurbished restaurant back under HIS terms." Mar 29, 10 11:23 AM

Fairway Restaurant closed after 20 years

Best of luck to you Dan. We have enjoyed many a fine meal in your Poxabogue and Montauk establishments. Well done.

If you start another restaurant, maybe you could offer a Poxie discount to start things off!

County Road 39 to see minor widening project in the fall

The proposed project runs from North Sea Road to Montauk Highway (at the "Diner/Glennon Motors corner" I assume). There is PLENTY of width for a bike lane here IMO, or at least a combined bike lane and widened shoulder. No problem.

ICE's comment about CR39 in general appears wise -- west of North Sea Road CR39 has already been widened, and is maxed out -- no room at all for bikes. Plus, bikers can (and would likely more enjoy) using the old Montauk Highway (27A) from Hampton Bays to Southampton Village (south of the Southampton campus of SUNY Stony Brook). This is a great route with nice views of the ocean and Shinnecock Bay at various high points. If there is not bike lane here, perhaps that could be a future project? My recollection is that the shoulder is quite wide, and that this stretch of road was resurfaced in the last couple of years. Bike on!

The new Southampton Town Supervisor and Board should take the reins here, and insist that this project include a bike lane, perhaps in conjunction with a wider/dedicated shoulder.

Once again -- only from North Sea Road to Hampton Road by the Princess Diner and the Glennon Cadillac and Buick car dealership." Mar 30, 10 6:42 PM

Southampton Town looks to confer authority of peace officers on code officers

A few questions come to mind.

Are these code enforcement officers members of a union, or the PBA? Will making them peace officers result in membership in the PBA or a similar union? Will their salaries go up, and will this move make them more efficient in keeping with any salary increases?

The next logical step will be to arm them with sidearms, which will raise similar questions down the road IMO, especially if the PBA gets involved and wants pay comparable to regular armed law enforcement officers.

Sounds as if this might get expensive." Mar 31, 10 12:12 PM

Questions still remain over police officer suspensions, reinstatements in Westhampton Beach

Southampton Village Mayor continues to push for secondary employment regulations

Aprils Fool's !

Is there a typographical error or two in this sentence from above?

"Department members no longer must include . . . the hours per week they will spend on the side job, or whether a professional license is required for the work."

So an officer could work 100 extra hours per week as a licensed private investigator, and there would be no paperwork required on this?

Has Mr. DePetris signed off on the details of this "second job" paperwork?

Is this an April Fool's joke?" Apr 2, 10 4:56 PM

Building inspector training requirements go unmet

To repeat, under NYS law it appears that certification for building inspectors, once granted, is valid until repealed, and that NYS does not have in place much of a process for repealing such certifications, regardless of the lack of COE classes missed.

Moreover, it appears that NYS has not initiated ANY disciplinary process/hearings to repeal the certification of ANY building inspector mentioned in the article.

What part of "no NYS filed complaints, no hearing process" don't you understand?

The building inspectors on the East End are very well qualified IMO, and the apparent lack of COE training by them is just a procedural matter, which NYS has NOT regulated well at all. This mis-regulation (not to mention the apparent lack of notiification about the available classes and possible penalties for not attending the ill-publicized COE classes) is a real Red Herring.

If you want to catch a Red Herring, go down to the Elwive Drain on Noyac Road near North Sea Road at the next full moon on Wednesday the 14th.

PS -- Contrary to some comments here, this is NOT brain surgery. We are talking about very talented and trained professionals who know their trade. Each of the building inspectors mentioned in the article above could probably TEACH the Continuing Education classes in question! Their non-attendance due to NYS non-notice is a NON-ISSUE!" Stony Brook University will announce drastic cuts to Stony Brook Southampton

The savings to be gained by teaching Sustainability to a new generation of students would more than offset the apparent short-term savings IMO.

Whale beached in East Hampton survives first attempt at euthanization

"Call me Ishmael."

As this delicate and sensitive moment plays out, Mr. Bowman might consider an Archie Bunker line paraphrased from the old TV sitcom:

"Chuck, STIFLE!"

The possible euthanization (by "harpoon, . . syringe" etc. -- this is a late April Fool's Joke, right?) will be a tragic comedy of epic proportions.

Mr. Bowman, please wake up, or at least shut up.

Then call off your whale boat and harpooners.

Abrupt and tearful end to Stony Brook Southampton dream

This is an incredibly short-sighted move IMO, and the basic problem was probably spawned in Albany at the door of Mr. Silver, Speaker of the Assembly.

Whale beached in East Hampton survives first attempt at euthanization

This paragraph from the article above makes me wonder:

"Chuck Bowman, president of the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation, said the hope is still that the whale will die naturally, but he said the members of his team were starting to devise a plan to euthanize the animal."

Is this an accurate statement from the reporter's conversation with Mr. Bowman?

Could not Mr. Bowman's first hope have been: "we hope the whale will revive and swim off to be reunited with her mother and family, thenceforth to have many happy offspring, and spread Peace on Earth?

What happened to hope in the Rosko development off Hill St. lo so many years ago, Chuck?" Apr 7, 10 7:11 PM
