Local Penalties Are More Severe Than Those Under State Airbnb Law

Yes, Mr.Thiele, people renting out their spare rooms in a house they own and pay property tax on to make ends meet is clearly a criminal act. Let's fine them even more than $7500, evict them when they fall behind on their tax bill, and foreclose on the home. Then the Town can buy it, renovate it using government funding, and then rent it out at subsidized rates to people the Town considers more worthy of housing." Oct 30, 16 5:20 PM

Voters To Decide Fate Of CPF Extension And Allocation Toward Water Quality Improvement Projects

What does paying for water quality mean, in the real world? Is this just a slush fund for politicians? If they're so sure that the culprit is phosphates in fertilizer, then just ban phosphates like DDT was banned." Nov 1, 16 8:06 PM

I agree that real estate taxes are not the issue. The issue that concerns me is expansion of local politicians power over a large amount of money with only a vague mandate to "preserve water quality". Simply put, I dont trust a politician, of whatever party affiliation, to resist temptation for the next 35 years." Nov 2, 16 9:30 AM

East Hampton Town Hall To Host Discussion On Tenants' Rights

We should make sure landlords are fined $10,000 for everything that violates any provision of any law, especially if it's renting for only a few weeks each summer to young professionals from the city to pay for the property taxes of Easthampton. Southampton Town Board Presses County On Tuckahoe Center

The profitability matters because giving a zoning change to a big developer and not small zoning variances to local residential property owners begs the question: Who benefits? If a developer wants a variance they used to hand over cash in paper bags to members of the Town government. Is this still going on? Just better hidden? What's the zoning change worth to the developers -- they have presented this to their investors and bankers, let the people of the Town know too." Nov 7, 16 2:11 PM

Southampton Town Might Now Open Different Western Beach To Four-Wheel Vehicles

Let's see, rich people in Quogue, nope can't have trucks on the beach there, rich people in Southampton village can't have trucks there, I know we can stick them on the poor folks beach in HB. Too bad that beach between K & L is only 2 feet wide at high tide." Dec 20, 16 7:58 PM

Southampton Town Might Now Open Different Western Beach To Four-Wheel Vehicles

But the rich folk who bought land and built Mega McMansions on the beach in Southampton don't want the dirty trucks and the working class who drive them on their beach any more, so elected officials who get their campaigns funded by these rich folk need to find a solution. And that solution is to open a beach that is already open 8 months a year and part time after 6pm the rest of the year to trucks, no matter that it will be closed by the Piping Plovers nesting the rest of the year. It's a promise that gives back, since the HB beachgoer is typically not thinking about who pays off whom, but rather why their property taxes are spent on subsidized housing that will inevitably be built in their school district, raising property taxes further. Where did the honest politicians go in this town? Why do we have this elitist Easthampton country club sycophant dumping this issue onto the laps of the plain folk who just want peace and quiet on the nicest beach in the Hamptons?" Southampton Town Expects To Hold At Least One More Public Hearing In January On Proposed Tuckahoe Center Change Of Zone Before Voting

Southampton Town Might Now Open Different Western Beach To Four-Wheel Vehicles

Merry Xmas bigfresh. The point is not that 4x4 driving on the beach is bad. The issue is that the proposal is to withdraw the wide beach in Southampton village and "substitute" a "new" area in Hampton Bays. The area proposed for 4x4 driving in K and L road area already permits beach driving except for between 9 and 6 for 4 months a year. Also, this is a really narrow beach, not the wide beach to the east of the Suffolk County beach east of the Inlet. Further, the road is closed from flooding at the full moon for one week a month anyway. The Town is trying to satisfy the rich folk with $10 million homes who donate to politicians and other assorted money schemes to get 4x4s off the beaches in front of their houses and put them only on the one beach in the Town of Southampton that does not have any private houses." Dec 26, 16 5:24 PM

I appreciate your desire for more 4x4 access but I think this is a substitution ploy not an addition plan. Also just west of Tiana is one of the Sandy storm washover areas. If it wasn't for the dumping of hundreds of truckloads of sand it would be an inlet, and may be one again soon. If you want to drive unrestricted, it's better to get a Green Key Suffolk County beach driving permit and use Cupsogue and Shinecock East as your access and fight to retain the current Town access, restricted between 9 and 6 in the summer and hope the Army Corps builds those FIMP jetties before the whole barrier beach is washed away by rising ocean levels." Dec 28, 16 5:39 AM

So by "picnic area" you're referring to the area immediately to the east of Shinecock East County park? The G Road access? First, that's a solid 30 minute drive in the summer from HB, and it's my understanding that new mega McMansion owners that built those dunebusters are trying to eliminate it as a 4x4 area. The area in HB that is being promoted already has 4x4 driving just not between 9am and 6pm in the summertime. Are you aware that this beach is much narrower than the beach to the East of Shinecock East which is one of the widest beaches due to the Inlet jetty? It seems to be a bait and switch to me but in any event a better beach for picnic area is in front of the new Dune Deck where the beach is wide and there's already access through the the Town beach just west of their. Good luck getting any politician to argue that the rich people in that part of town allow a picnic beach with trucks. Bottom line from HB:. If you're getting thrown out of Southampton by rich folk and the political power they but you might want to find a candidate to vote for that will advocate for the existing beach not try to sway you into a false equivalent one in HB." Dec 28, 16 11:19 AM

The residents of Hampton Bays have not been involved in the fight to retain the "picnic area" 4x4 7/24 access. The reason this discussion has come up is because there is an attempt to remove that access. The area proposed in Hampton Bays, unlike the G Road "picnic area", is easily accessible on foot by people parking at the eastern end in the Tiana lot, K Road or L Road, all town beach permit parking. Further, given the restriction of Federal Piping Plover protection, these beaches are all accessible to 4x4 driving now, just not when they are crowded with families and their young children in the summer months between 9am and 6pm. This is not the case in the G Road access which is very difficult to access by foot as it's probably a quarter mile walk from parking. Therefore the offer by the Town Supervisor seems like a false equivalent and would be opposed by the majority of Hampton Bays residents and beachgoers. I would suggest the access from Lashleys just west of the Dune Deck where existing jetties create a wider beach would be more suitable for another "picnic area" type parking situation. This type of truck parking will not work in the L Road area, if indeed this area exists at all after the next severe winter storm." Dec 29, 16 4:30 AM

East Hampton School District Denied New Trial In Sandpebble Lawsuit

It's so lucky the citizens of Hampton Bays rejected the Sandpebble development of a new library -- no doubt it would have been a similar fiasco. 9% interest plus legal fees. What a disastrous outcome. " Jan 3, 17 7:09 PM

The State government has controlled school budgets with the caps -- health care costs for teachers and administrators eat up any increase in budget -- so the only way local politically connected contractors can make extra money is through special construction budgets like libraries and fancy new sports facilities. That's going to cause local judges to throw cash at these contractors since the uncontested judge ships and appointed judges reward party stalwarts whose coffers are filled by cash rich and ethically challenged real estate developers and construction management company owners. Until folks wake up and vote for fiscal and social responsibility this will be a story that repeats itself throughout the Island." Jan 4, 17 11:24 AM

That's actually a good point. Folks who have trouble balancing a check book are put in charge of $30 million annual budgets. It's no wonder they sign contracts they don't understand for projects no one really scrutinizes. Time for fiscal responsibility." Jan 5, 17 5:27 PM

Dispute Over Southampton Town Union Contracts To Continue Into New Year

The issue seems simple: this is about total cost of government. For me, clearly any additional union wage workers will result in higher costs with the same or less level of service. This requires an explanation from the Town Board:. Why do you want higher costs for less service? They should be fighting for the citizens of this town not the part time employees." Healthcare costs for current employees and pensioned retirees grow at a rate 2 to 3 times the inflation rate. That mismatch drives most of the budget stress. They get something for their taxes, namely quality healthcare. All we have is a complicated expensive mess that enriches health insurance execs and funds political campaigns. Oh yeah, and I forgot Israel, which spends more on its military as a percentage of GDP and still has the highest per capita number of doctors in the world and high quality healthcare for all its citizens that need it. For free.

We are being played for suckers." Jan 16, 17 9:40 PM

We are taxed at the same rate or higher than all of the countries I mentioned, especially on New York State, Suffolk County, and in the Town of Southampton, NY. For $400/month each, we cover all healthcare costs on the East End. Why don't we have healthcare? Healthcare insurance companies and political parasites spend our savings on their salaries and pensions while common citizens suffer. Why do the Irish, Israelis, Japanese, Canadians, Danish, Finnish, French, English, Scottish, Belgian, Dutch, New Zealanders and Australians have healthcare? Because they are smarter than the American suckers who accept nonsense from their politicians." Jan 17, 17 9:36 AM

Whose hand is in your pocket?

(AP) — UnitedHealth Group’s earnings soared 56 percent in the final quarter of 2016, helped by growth in its core health insurance business plus gains from its Optum business segment.

The nation’s largest health insurer beat Wall Street expectations for the quarter and also reaffirmed its earnings forecast for the new year." Jan 17, 17 9:05 PM

National Center for Health Statistics
Center for Disease Control
Health Expenditures
Data are for the U.S.
Per capita national health expenditures: $9,523 (2014)

New York State population:. 19.75 million

Health Care State budget 48.1 billion
Health Care spending local government budget 15.1 billion
TOTAL NEW YORK GOVERNMENT HEALTHCARE SPENDING: 63.2 Billion

If you do the math, and even a poor high school student like myself can add, subtract and divide, I believe you will find that taking the national average per capita health spending, multiplying by the population of New York State, subtracting the current payment by state and local governments for healthcare, dividing by the population dividing by the number of months in a year, the answer is $527 per person per month.

No co-payments, no deductible.

Now give a 10% discount for being less than 40 lbs overweight.

Now give a 10% discount for not smoking.

That's $106 off $527 or $421.

Now explain to me why we don't have Healthcare for $421 per month for non smoking, less than 40 lbs overweight people?

I'll explain it.

We're suckers.

" Jan 20, 17 11:33 PM

Why would anyone complain about the VA? The best deserve the best. For all non vets, good enough will do.

Also, it would be great if non smoking, non obese people could buy healthcare insurance that excludes those free riding fat smokers. They could go pay for their own healthcare insurance.

That would solve alot of cost issues. I'd vote for that." Jan 21, 17 1:27 PM
