Levy pulls county patrols from state highways

i know for a fact that the state troopers sit around in groups of 5 or more watching tv waiting for their pensions to vest because i've seen it. let levy do his job and get our tax dollars working here in suffolk county and not going to some bunch of boondogglers up in albany." Sep 21, 08 8:20 PM

Town Justices upset over criticisms about court schedules

The Justice system in Southampton is a fiscal nightmare. Adding police and the long range pension liability that comes with this added headcount, adding a judge without increasing productivity,, building a $3 million courthouse--for what? So we can get more traffic tickets? Lets remember the cops taking bribes and the town council members getting caught on tape taking bribes before we spend another $3 million on another town construction boondoggle. Enough is enough, start voting these kooks out!" Nov 1, 08 11:56 PM

Justice Court candidates profiled

Its time for a new deal in politics, let's start putting in the new faces to make that happen." Nov 2, 08 12:05 AM

With expanded court, justices spend less time on the bench

actually that almost makes me want to vote for demayo. how about everyone who got any silly parking ticket raise your hand and have it dismissed? how about just letting up on the handing out of dumb tickets to begin with? it's time we stopped making every honest citizen feel like a felon for unimportant infractions of minor traffic regulations. let's worry about keeping our community clean and safe." Preforeclosures start to hit higher-priced properties

this is what happens when the government intervenes in the market--property owners of multi million dollar homes purposefully default so they can get taxpayer money. the absurdity of the situation is no doubt lost on our elected officials." Dec 3, 08 12:54 PM

Thiele pushes new solar initiatives

Now that's a good idea! Put local labor to work installing solar panels and stop sending our money to saudi arabia, iran and venenzuela!" Dec 8, 08 1:20 PM

Westhampton Beach resident charged in hedge fund scam

isn't he mayor of quogue also going to trial as a hedge fund securities fraudster? and isn't his wife the chief judge in quogue? the "nightmare" will end when americans stop being such sheep at the poll booth." Dec 20, 08 1:13 PM

Debate on forced retirement for police officers continues

"the high volume of felony narcotics crimes in Southampton" was the reason for hiring more detectives--20 years ago. it's time to reconsider the absurd notion that the town is a hotbed of drug dealing that justifies building a new court and hiring expensive police officers that require a "long tail" of pension liabilities for a small town on the east end of long island. if there are serious drug crimes, the local beat policeman can call in the state police or the federal agents (DEA) who have more experience in handling serious crimes of this nature, and southampton town uniform police can get back to their job of enforcing quality of life crimes. let's put some sanity back into our budget." Well-known Quogue establishment closes its doors

quogue gets what it deserves, a mini-madoff as mayor and finances built on giving out bogus parking and traffic tickets. congrats on your shiny new courthouse, the closing of the last quaint business in town, and the deliberate destruction of anything resembling old time east end long island. if you don't like it, send mr. and mrs. motz off to charm school at your next election." Police Commission proposal is revived at Town Hall

here's a thought: how about a 3 man police force? they could patrol on foot constantly in southampton and hampton bays and have one left over to respond in a car. for other crimes, we could count on the state police, which is what our state taxes are for, aren't they?" Jan 10, 09 8:35 AM

Town capital budget discrepancy is downgraded

Maybe the Town of Southampton can be re-organized as a Bank Holding Company and qualify for TARP funds from the federal government." Feb 2, 09 1:38 AM

Town might seek forensic audit of capital budget

Can you imagine the mess that will happen when the "stimulus" package gets approved and billions of dollars will have to be allocated and spent on projects in 90 days? Will make the graft in Iraq look like nursery school lunch money." Feb 6, 09 7:04 PM

Baykeeper sues over Dockers dock plans

A quick trip to Docker's reveals that its situated far from Inlets, and has shallow bay frontage. It's obvious that a marina situated here would be inappropriate and damage the environment. Over the last 10 years, this former small bar has been expanded and turned into a fancy high volume restaurant. Where does the waste water go? What happens when jet skis churn a shallow bottom and drop quarts of oil from their engines into this area? And then everyone wonders why the bay gets brown tide. The approval was a joke and the business people who own this bar/restaurant should be satisfied with the excess profits they've wrested from this environmentally fragile area and move on to somewhere in the country where the local government doesn't care about reckless development. I suggest southern Florida." Feb 17, 09 1:50 PM

East End community struggling to recruit and retain doctors

Malpractrice insurance costs for an Obstetrics specialist on the East End of Long Island is between $175,000 and $225,000 per year. Reimbursement rate for the delivery of a healthy baby is $2000. So a doctor needs to deliver 100 babies just to break even on the insurance. Not a great business." Feb 17, 09 2:06 PM

Malpractice insurance rates are high for Obstetrics because birth trauma lawsuits result in immense monetary payments from insurance companies to lawyers and the surviving members of the lawsuits. Insurance companies aren't in the business of losing money (unless they're AIG) so charge high rates. How about we limit the amount of money that a lawyer can make from a medical malpractice lawsuit, the same way that a doctor has the amount of money they can make from delivering babies limited? Let's see what the legislators in Albany do with that one." Feb 17, 09 9:54 PM

Bishop touts economic stimulus package

there's $10 billion in the package for libraries and $25 billion for building broadband internet. let's get some of that funding." Feb 24, 09 3:36 AM

there's a ton of funding in the stimulus package for education construction. let's put some of that into the new Southampton campus of SUNY Stony Brook. The upgrade in facilities would create a permanent positive effect for the area--a world class institution of higher education brings in positive educated people, both as students and staff. Republican majority on Southampton Town Board quashes plan to restructure financial department

Why is there a problem with the budget? There's nothing complicated about a town budget. Salaries are tied to headcount, along with benefits with those salaries. Pensions for past employees are defined and managed by the state pension fund anyway, aren't they? The rest of it is capital projects, which are bid out and funded, and therefore individually accounted for by each project separately. If the project hasn't begun, then it is a "pending" spreadsheet. Any 2nd year CPA at any medium sized division at any Fortune 1000 corporation does much more complex accounting tracking. Managing Great Plains software is not nothing, but you could train a decent Quckbooks user in about a month. The fact that this is an issue means the Town's Supervisor and her staff are not up to the task and should be replaced at the next election. It also sounds that Ms. T-H found the right person for the job and wanted to get rid of an incompetent, within the limitations of some onerous civil service regulations. If she stole this idea from Ms. Kabot and leaked it to the press, then Ms. Kabot should say that directly." Feb 25, 09 11:56 PM

Riverside mobile home park residents are upset over doubling of taxes

the folks in riverside should secede from southampton and join riverhead. southampton is a mess financially and it will be a real debacle once real estate values crash this year and next. it's not right that your children go to riverhead schools but you're not in the town of riverhead as residents. unless you like the price for the resident's sticker for the beach and whatever other benefits you get from southampton. by the way, if your trailer park organization is a not for profit, why does it pay any taxes? does a church pay real estate taxes based on the value of its real estate? if that's true then that church on the beach in southampton should be paying some real coin." Feb 26, 09 12:10 AM

New museum plans on hold because of economy

sag is right. the library building is a beautiful structure and the good part of the current economy is that arrogance can be set aside and we can do what's right instead of trying to boost egos. let's make the parrish art museum work for our community by keeping it in a pedestrian friendly space that encourages casual use as well as destination use. the big box museum plans should be scrapped for good, no one wants a wal mart museum in southampton." Transfer stations to shut down one day a week, for now

yes by all means lets hire more police and incur exorbitant pension liabilities to make sure we can give tickets to people who park their cars in the wrong place, then build expensive court buildings to railroad through all these fines, but keeping open garbage disposal sites? that's a luxury.
