Westhampton Beach Superintendent's Proposed Budget Pierces Tax Cap

Yes, Yes, lets continue the utter nonsense of blaming teachers for everything. It's really comical at this point? So many people present teachers as if they are fortune 500 CEOS. If teaching is sooo great and sooo easy why don't you all become teachers yourselves?" Mar 29, 12 6:22 PM

Just the other day, I saw another "VERY RICH" teacher eating at Panera and driving a Prius with 4 DOORS. Wow, how decadent!" Mar 30, 12 6:57 PM

I guess you do have a conflict of interest there. Concessions do have to be made some times. i just think that this whole bashing teachers thing has gotten way out of hand." Mar 31, 12 7:50 AM

The counter argument to the CEO defense is that teachers perform a civil service duty that is vital to a community, as do police and fire depts. It has been a long standing reality, that these jobs are rewarded with pensions in return for service to a community. " Mar 31, 12 12:30 PM

Can we stop with "these tough economic times". I know many people, landscapers, and other trade workers who tell me that they are so busy, that they can't keep up with the work. Yes some people are struggling, but the economy here on the East End is better than in most places. " Apr 1, 12 5:10 PM

No person in their right mind would take a job as a superintendent for less than 100k. They run a school district, and you feel that they should make less than 100k? Judging by your comments you appear to oppose anyone in education earning a six figure salary." Apr 1, 12 5:12 PM

And what does it say about a society that does not respect education? And we wonder why the United States ranks so poorly amongst developed nations. And once again, if teaching is such a gravy train, then why don't all of the complainers become teachers. I'm sure they would all then take pay cuts and pension cuts voluntarily. Can we stop this STUPID, YES STUPID, MORONIC idea of presenting teachers as rich people. " Apr 2, 12 3:49 PM

Most of the complaining sounds like nothing more than hate rooted in envy. " Apr 2, 12 3:50 PM

Springs School Will Cut Teacher Positions To Stay Under Tax Cap

The 2 % tax cap is a soft tyranny instituted Cuomo and all the politicians who are using it to feed the hunger of a faction of voters who spew hate and envy towards teachers and other public employees. I don't even understand how the tax cap is legal as there was already a democratic system in place, in that a community could already vote down a budget. Springs school will NOT be a better school as a result of these cuts. I am very concerned for the future of my children's school, and also deeply troubled by the number of angry voices directed towards teachers and public education in the community of Springs. " Apr 6, 12 9:10 AM

By referring to education as a "part time" profession, you show that you do not value its merits. Remember that unions were only created so that people could not take advantage of workers, as was done so often during the industrial revolution and throughout world history. Have unions in some cases become too powerful, yes, but they exist for a reason." Apr 7, 12 1:47 PM

Professions are not paid based upon their hours. They are paid by their importance and the requirements needed to garner those careers. Teaching is a very important job, and it requires a college degree, plus a masters. Teachers in this area, Long Island and metro NYC make respectable professional incomes. Are they hurting financially, probably not. I wouldn't say they are "rich" either. If you find teaching to be such a great job, my only suggestion for you, is to become a teacher." Apr 7, 12 5:43 PM

Springs is broke because it does not have commercial real-estate, and its student population has risen heavily over the past 5 years, without an increase in development or tax revenue. " Apr 8, 12 10:21 AM

It would be hard to figure that out, but it wouldn't matter because public schools are required by law to educate all children who live within the district., so long as they register for school." Apr 9, 12 7:48 PM

You are absolutely 100% correct! Politicians, fed and state level, along with board members all having no experience in the classroom, yet then somehow qualified to be experts in the decision making process. I can't think of another field in which this is true. " Apr 9, 12 8:56 PM

Springs School Narrows Superintendent Search Down To Three

It will be a part -time position, so the salary would be far less than that figure." Apr 18, 12 6:55 PM

Whole Foods Is Coming To East Hampton For The Summer

I'll take Whole Foods over all the useless retail stores in EH village that have 5k dollar jeans!" Apr 22, 12 10:11 AM

Why can't we have stores that other areas have? I'm all for preserving character, but I'm also sick and tired of having to drive to all the way to riverhead for affordable items, and having to use the internet to get virtually everything. " Apr 22, 12 7:19 PM

I love going to local stores, yet the problem is that in this area, shopping locally often means paying tourist/resort prices. " Apr 23, 12 5:22 PM

Counter Protest By Immigrant Laborers Held At Southampton 7-Eleven

illegal immigration is a huge problem. It bankrupts hospitals, and major public institutions such as public schools. Unfortunately the feds want to ignore this issue, and I have lost faith that it will ever be corrected. Those two guys in Southampton are simply wasting their time." May 6, 12 7:37 PM

I believe Ron Paul has been saying this all along. " May 7, 12 4:00 PM

School Results: Tuckahoe Is Only District On South Fork To Reject Proposed 2012-13 Budget

I believe any person can be on a school board so long as they are not an employee of the district." May 15, 12 6:33 PM

I have given up trying to understand those who continue to do nothing but whine and spew hate and jealousy towards teachers and public education. The only thing our nation is going to be "tapped out" of are educated people, if we don't fund our public schools. I'd rather my taxes went to educating our youth than to wasting it on useless wars in the middle east that do nothing to increase our security and do nothing but cost us money and lives of young Americans." May 16, 12 6:58 AM

I think all of you people should become teachers to live the lavish life. Your comical. Keep ripping on teachers until no one wants to become one, and then deal with the cost of stupid down the road by paying for more prisons and unemployment." May 16, 12 5:06 PM

Why don't all of you people just become teachers? In an area like the Hamptons, flooded with some of the richest people in the world, you spew hatredand envy towards teachers of all people, and act like they are billionares. Get Real!" May 17, 12 9:04 AM

So now teachers aren't "normal people". Are you for real? Look, teachers are paid professional salaries similar, actually lower than people who have similar educational backgrounds such as masters degrees. It is statistically proven that Americans with higher degrees earn more money than those with lower. Who are you comparing teachers salaries to? If its to uneducated people with just GEDs then that is a stupid comparison. Don't blame people who did what it taked to get good, secure, well-paying careers. The goal is to be the Pharaoh, not the ditch digger!" May 17, 12 6:05 PM

The states that are amongst lowest average teacher compensation are also amongst the lowest in student achievement. You get what you pay for. And also in terms of civility, there is no civility in ripping teachers like Maxwell. " May 18, 12 10:33 PM

27east=place for people who hate teachers to gather and vent about how their lives and jobs suck, and how others are to blame for their failures" May 18, 12 10:36 PM

So teachers don't deserve raises? Why not? Teachers are paying more into health care now and will in the future. Changes to the pension system have already been made. Tier 1s are all retiring now. The other tiers require far more service and have less lucrative pensions. I just find it absurd the way teachers are presented as 1percenters on this website. " May 19, 12 3:00 PM

Once again if all of you here think teaching is such a gravy train, go back to school, then get a masters, then take 60 more hours of course work and training, take 3 state required exams, and then pay off all your loans, then finally try to get a job as a "RICH" teacher. " May 19, 12 3:04 PM

No doubt, there are many people like you Leon who are educated and successful, and present viable opinions. There are however many people on this site who simply rip teachers out of envy. For example they do things like complain about the 180 days. that is what it is. School is in session for 180 days. They also do nothing but complain about teachers hours, when professional jobs are not paid by hours, but are paid on importance and requirements. I have no issue with teachers making concessions in terms of benefits and pension contributions. I do however have major issues with folks who don't value it as a profession, and attempt to portray teaching as nothing more than high paid babysitting. This angle is simply ignorant and quite frankly stupid!" May 20, 12 8:13 AM

Maxwell cut it out with the 9 months nonsense. School is in session for 9 months. They're kids and they need a break. Once again, professional jobs are not paid by time and hours, they are paid by their value and importance, and on educational background. Are you aware that the teachers who make low six figure salaries have been teaching for at least 15 years? And is 100k really so much, living on the East End? I think not. I know many, many locals who earn good livings here, and far more money than teachers. Why don't you stop circling the wagons and quit whining about what teachers have and you don't. Why don't you become a teacher, then you can cut your own pay and pension. " May 21, 12 4:46 PM

Money invested in education prevents future money from being wasted on welfare and prisons. The cost of stupid! I'd also rather my taxes helped kids get an education and prepare them for 21st century careers, rather then shipping them off to that crap hole called the Middle East to fight useless wars that do nothing to enhance our security and cost us too many young lives!" May 21, 12 6:52 PM

A teacher with a masters in history might know a thing about the history of our nation and the abuse of laborers during the industrial revolution, hence the formation of unions. I guess under your plan, you would just fire every teacher after ten years of service and replace them with a cheaper priced neophyte? What makes you think teachers can't get other jobs? Your comments indicate that you don't respect teachers. They are also ignorant and cliche. "Teachers make too much money and only work half the year". BLAH, BLAH,BLAH... Who's next on your comical class envy list? COPS? Then sanitation workers? Perhaps NYC Firemen? What a joke! END OF DISCUSSION!!!" May 22, 12 5:23 PM

Our country ranks 26th because education is not respected and too many kids come from homes that don't provide any support. Too many people take schooling and education for granted. the bottom line is that if you take advantage of your educational opportunities you will succeed later in life. How do all of these Asian kids come over here and do so well in our schools? You know why, because they come from homes that respect education and teachers. You think they bash teachers and rip public education. Only the stupid do this because they resent the fact that they wasted their schooling years goofing off." May 22, 12 7:55 PM

Illegals have cost east end schools far more money than teacher compensations. " May 23, 12 7:04 AM

Teachers and Fancy Cars Now? This stuff is beyond stupid. Anyone who thinks teachers are rich, needs to go back to school themselves, or perhaps check themselves into a mental institution." May 24, 12 10:07 AM

How do you know what their spouses do for a living? You may not like to hear this, but teaching is a professional job, and it come with respectable professional pay. All of your comments promote nothing more than envy. It's sad. You're the one circling the wagon." May 24, 12 3:35 PM

There are teacher evaluations. In terms of spending, Springs is no where near that 30k figure you mentioned per student, and the school also stayed within the cap. The criteria for the evaluations has been set by the state education dept. I do think teachers should be held accountable to work hard, like all other jobs, and like all other jobs there are some lazy people, but the way some folks on this site bash the profession is unfair. There are many, many dedicated teachers, who work very hard, and do a very good job. It is not an easy job. Many people assume that all kids come to school prepared to learn, but the reality is that many kids come from broken homes that provide little support, and there are also many children that are major behavioral problems, due to external factors that are far outside the teacher's control. Teachers these days in many cases are being asked to act as parents. this is unrealistic, and not what the job is supposed to be. Most of the students who do well, come from homes that are stable, and respect education. Teaching is NOT the easy job that many people on this site portray it to be." May 25, 12 7:04 AM

ok we get it. Public schools suck, teachers are rich (joke), blah, blah, blah, Enjoy the holiday weekend. Oh yea four days for the teachers, that probably really gets you guys fired up!" May 26, 12 2:20 PM

teachers should not indoctrinate. I agree. Summers are not paid. the job is paid over ten months. Some teachers don't work over the summer and save up all year, some work full time in the summer to support their families. I am curious why many of you here pick on teachers alone when police have far more lucrative contracts, including over time pay and fatter pensions." May 28, 12 6:26 PM

Southampton School Officials Consider Eliminating Valedictorian, Salutatorian Designations

Mitt Romney Will Fundraise In The Hamptons On Sunday

Ron Paul is the only candidate who speaks the truth. The networks and mainstream kool-aide drinkers can't get enough of Romney/obama. They should run on the same ticket, as all we will get is more of the same. More money and lives lost on useless wars and a continued dragging economy, as special interest groups grow fatter than ever. " Jul 8, 12 7:38 PM

Our Gov. will never stop illegal immigration. Stop wasting your time on this issue. I have completely given up hope, and no loger give it any thought. Romney and especially Obama, will do nothing to stop or even less curb it. No carrots will be taken away, such as free education, birthright citizenship, free medical care. Ron paul is the only candidate who speaks the truth on this issue, and he will not get elected because he's too honest." Jul 12, 12 8:36 PM

Obama Fundraiser Is Planned For August 24

Folks helping to re-elect an ineffective president who has been a complete failure. Obama=continued failing national economy (south fork excluded) and more money and troops dedicated to useless wars that do nothing to protect us. On the other hand, there is Romney, who is a best, the lesser of two evils. RON PAUL spoke the truth, but his ideas make to much sense to appeal to all the kool-aide drinkers. These folks who continue to worship Obama puzzle me even more than those who see Romney as some great alternative." Jul 31, 12 10:35 PM
