Around Town Hall: Southampton Town details hamlet boundaries in new map

Regarding the 2% convenience fee that is charged for using a credit card, it's purpose is to cover the fees that are charged by the credit card companies (known as the discount rate). If the credit card users did not pay that fee, then the Town would have to absorb the cost, which would result in all taxpayers paying for it. " Dec 17, 09 10:18 PM

Walt - we continue to mail a tax bill to every property owner. Taxpayers can now view and print a duplicate online(at no cost), and I am hoping that it will reflect a savings if we print less and ultimately order less forms. Paying by credit card is another option for people, and since it is treated similarly to the tax payments that are paid by check and processed through the Bank lockbox, there is no cost savings to the Town. Some taxpayers choose the credit card option to earn miles on their card, and others choose it for cash flow purposes. And many more prefer to pay by check and avoid the fees. We are trying to offer people options, and it is a breakeven proposition - any fees that are charged are used to cover the direct charges from the processors." Dec 19, 09 10:57 PM

Flanders, Riverside and Northampton Community Association Calls For Equalization Rate

Thank you for asking - indeed I do know what I am doing. I realize that the story is not completely clear, but the problems that were encountered had only to do with the School District. They submitted a tax levy document to the town on Nov. 10, and then retracted it on Nov. 30 saying the figures were incorrect. The School District then submitted a new document on Dec. 1, reflecting significantly higher numbers than the original submission." Jan 20, 11 10:59 PM

Southampton Town Board Considers Cyclical Reassessments Instead Of Annual Process

It actually happened this tax year that a decrease in assessment resulted in lower taxes. East Quogue areas as well as some areas of Southampton and North Sea are examples of it. " Sep 20, 11 2:24 PM

Although you failed to prove your point that this has to do with politics, I am impressed by your ability to run down my resume, and at 4:23am no less! The addendum is extra special even though you missed some of my favorite credentials - Past Pres of Rotary, Treasurer of Water Mill Community Club, and Board member at SYS.

The problem with this blog is that it allows cowards such as you to hide behind your anonymous screen names and post comments that have NOTHING to do with the subject at hand. Get some sleep, will ya?" Apr 23, 12 6:06 PM

I don't have all the answers Chief. You know more than I do about potential candidates for Bus mgr. Was Russell the best candidate?? I don't know but I can tell you that he is one of the hardest working people in Town Hall and the Supervisor is getting your money's worth out of him. And Al's job, again ??, but it has nothing to do with the content of this news story, which is that he has been charged with a serious crime.

If you feel that you are not being fairly represented, step up and get involved in a productive manner rather than taking shots at people from behind this smoke screen. " Apr 23, 12 9:04 PM

Southampton Village Homeowner Asks For Relief From Pyramid Law

It is sad to see that once again the anonymous bloggers are quick to pass judgement without having any idea of all the facts and what the property owners have been through since the moment the original application was presented to ARB. Perhaps you all should review the 4 ARB, 2 ZBA hearing transcripts and the Village police call logs, and then let us know what you think. No summonses issued, no stop work order - that should make you wonder. It's all because these not very neighborly neighbors do not want a house there, period. With all due respect to the pyramid code, the pitch of the roof is not what this is about. " Feb 15, 13 5:49 PM

No stop work order issued - look it up at the Bldg dept. And I didn't say that ARB addresses the pyramid code so I do not need to look it up. But thank you for the suggestion. " Feb 15, 13 9:23 PM

Sorry I should have used "recordings" in place of transcripts. They are available at Village Hall." Feb 16, 13 8:23 AM

Southampton Village ZBA Grants Pyramid Law Variance For Wooley Street Home

Oh George, you are incorrect and tragically transparent all at the same time with this comment. I support the applicants because Mrs. Valk is one of my closest friends since 7th grade at SIS (sorry to all of the "out of town developer" conspiracy theorists who were also completely wrong). And as someone who attended every hearing, I am well versed on the "neighbors desires". Walter made it very clear that for the past 15 years of living there they enjoyed a "park like setting" next door and now that is gone. Why don't you ask him yourself since you two are on the same political team and stop pontificating on something you know little about?" Mar 13, 13 12:01 PM

Wrong again George. But please by all means keep trying. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while. " Mar 13, 13 1:41 PM

Bishop, Zeldin Hold First Debate In Hampton Bays

Actually, Lee Zeldin never ran in a primary against Randy Altschuler - in 2008 Lee was the designated R candidate. In 2010 and 2012, Randy was in a primary with George Demos, and this year it was Lee and George.

Tuckahoe School Files Suit Against Town For Denying FOIL Request For Golf Course Revenues

Holly - I am not looking to get involved in this debate. I believe that you are referring to me in the post two above this one so I would only like to clarify. The Town Assessor is not a golfer, and I am actually the Tax Receiver. I am not involved with determining assessed values of the golf courses, thus no conflict of interest exists." Jay Schneiderman Defends Residency In Southampton

"He is still receiving a STAR property tax exemption—a distinction reserved for primary residences—on his Lee Court property in Montauk. Mr. Schneiderman said he was not aware he was still earning the school tax exemption on his East Hampton property, noting that the exemption is renewed automatically."

Interesting statement from Jay considering that in 2014 NY State required ALL taxpayers with Basic STAR to re-register in order to continue their exemption. It was definitely not an automatic renewal, and many honest taxpayers lost their exemption after missing the re-registration deadline. " Oct 21, 15 5:34 PM

mrobin - I am the actual tax receiver, however, it is the Assessor who handles all administration of exemptions. I can assure you that the Town Assessor does not do politics and I don't even know her politicial affiliation. The Assessor's office has limited resources so the best they can do is make sure that everyone has only one star exemption. Does that make it ok - no, but in this case the difference in value between HB and EQ star is about $70 - do you want them to follow everyone around for $70? Please try to redraw your own conclusion since your first one missed the mark." Oct 22, 15 8:24 AM

Primaries Set For Southampton Town Races

I am writing today as the designated candidate of the Independence Party to ask for your vote. I have been serving as the Tax Receiver for the past 12 years, and have been working hard on behalf of the Town taxpayers to run an efficient office and maintain a consistent budget. When I took over in 2007, the office had a full time staff of 7, which I have been able to reduce to 3 without sacrificing the high level of service that property owners expect and deserve. I am very proud to have achieved 11 perfect audits from the County Comptroller as well as the Town’s independent auditors, and am currently working on number 12!

In addition to my work with the Town, I am a very active volunteer within the community. Currently I serve as the President of the Board of Directors for SYS Recreation Center, Treasurer of the Water Mill Community Club, Past President of Southampton Rotary and member of the Southampton Elks Club and the Southampton Village CVO committee. It is incredibly important for me to give back to our community where I live and work.

Prior to being elected Tax Receiver, I spent 15 years in the banking and finance industries, accumulating extensive management experience. I am a 1986 graduate of Southampton High School and graduated Cum Laude from both Providence College (Bachelor of Science degree in Finance) and Fordham University (MBA in Finance).

It is an honor to serve the taxpayers of Southampton as Receiver of Taxes, and look forward to continuing in this position, with your help. Please vote for me in the primary on June 25, 2019.
