Man injured in surf in Westhampton Beach

Aug 11, 2010 1:55 PM

A man was shuttled to the hospital via helicopter early Monday afternoon after he was injured in the surf at Rogers Beach in Westhampton Beach, authorities said.

Shortly before 12:30 p.m., a call went out on emergency frequencies that a 63-year-old man with a history of a “fractured neck” was hurt while body surfing.

A Suffolk County Police Medevac helicopter landed on the Great Lawn in Westhampton Beach, followed closely by a Westhampton War Memorial Ambulance vehicle carrying the victim. The helicopter departed for Stony Brook University Medical Center with the victim on board about 10 minutes later.

The victim, who was from upstate New York, was injured when he “tumbled” in the surf, according to Westhampton
War Memorial Ambulance
Chief Rita Wyatt. The helicopter was called in due to the risk
of a neck or back injury, Ms. Wyatt said.

Mike Scavo, a paramedic, said the victim was “very stable” upon delivery to the helicopter. He appeared to be conscious and was moving his arms as he was loaded in.

The swimmer was not identified by authorities.

Saw it happen at the beach. The lifeguards did an incredible job and were on him in seconds. Everyone from the guards to the deck crew were calm and professional. Well done to all the Rogers Beach staff

What is a man with a history of neck fracture doing body surfing?

Charge him for the rescue IMO.

PBR, at 471 comments, there evidently isn't much about which you don't have an opinion. Yours is a harsh cliche' that those of us in EMT and Fire Rescue hear all the time.

Why is a 63 year old man with a history of neck issues 'body surfing' in the first place?!

package4, today's so-called "harsh cliche" may be come tomorrow's norm when people with known physical ailments DELIBERATELY put themselves in harm's way, thereby (on occasion) requiring very expensive emergency response and medical attention.

What dollar value would you put on this entire AirEvac rescue and its medical response at SB? Please factor in any possible lawsuits and settlements including attorneys' fees and court costs. 100k? 200k? On our dime?

The insurance industry ...more
