The Westhampton Beach Fire Department responded to a call Monday morning at 7:01 a.m. for a car submerged in the Moniebogue Canal south of Main Street.

Officials say the two occupants of the Kia SUV were able to escape through the front windows and were standing in a nearby parking lot when responders arrived at the scene. The driver told the fire department that they had fallen asleep at the wheel, causing the car to drive into the canal.

The Westhampton Beach Fire Department responded to the scene with a rescue boat and was able to secure a cable around the vehicle and a wrecker was able to pull the car to shore. The occupants of the vehicle were assessed by ambulance personnel, but refused transport to the hospital.
