Police Identify Woman Killed In Boating Accident East Of Cupsogue Beach In Westhampton

Jul 16, 2019 1:08 PM

A Shirley woman was killed in a boating accident east of the Moriches Inlet on Sunday, police said.

Mi Hua Hsu, 56, was thrown from her drifting recreational boat at approximately 6:28 p.m. after a 50-foot Sea Ray with three people aboard crashed into it a quarter mile off Cupsogue Beach in Westhampton, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.

Ms. Hsu’s husband, Jack Chin, 50, of Shirley, jumped from the vessel just moments before the crash with the Sea Ray and suffered minor injuries.

Ms. Hsu was pulled from the water by the Coast Guard and taken to the Coast Guard station in East Moriches, where she was pronounced dead by a physician assistant from the Suffolk County medical examiner’s office.

Mr. Chin was rescued by passing boaters and was transported to Long Island Community Hospital in East Patchogue for treatment.

The passengers aboard the Sea Ray, operated by Robert Burkhardt, 65, of East Moriches, did not report any injuries, police said.

Suffolk County Police could not confirm the make or model of the smaller boat, noting that it is currently overturned in the water. Both boats were impounded for safety checks, according to a police press release.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
