Southampton councilwoman accuses supervisor of trying to 'control' her

Jan 21, 2010 3:18 PM

Southampton Town Councilwoman Nancy Graboski accused Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst of trying to control her at the Town Board work session Thursday morning, while they were discussing who to appoint to different financial committees.

Ms. Graboski is pushing for the Town Board to reappoint the current members of the Budget and Finance Committee, which was created last year by former Town Supervisor Linda Kabot. Ms. Throne-Holst would like to see the committee abolished, and possibly re-created with a more specific mission and function.

During the heated discussion, Ms. Throne-Holst said that Ms. Graboski should reach out to her more, and also said that she wanted to interview different, new people for the Budget and Finance Committee. But Ms. Graboski grew frustrated, explaining that the town’s financial crisis is the board’s number-one priority.

“Do not try to argue with me and do not try to control me,” Ms. Graboski said. “Someone is controlling the gate for resolutions I want to get on the docket.”

Ms. Throne-Holst remained quiet and looked down at the table during most of the tiff. She urged Ms. Graboski to speak to her after the work session.

“I’m not sure of the source of your ire,” Ms. Throne-Holst said.

Ms. Graboski countered back: “There’s a control issue here.”

During the argument, councilmen Jim Malone and Chris Nuzzi, remained quiet. However, earlier in the meeting Mr. Malone said he was in favor of waiting to appoint people to the Budget and Finance Committee, supporting Ms. Throne-Holst’s approach to the advisory group.

Before Ms. Graboski broached the issue of control in Town Hall, she said the fiscal crisis discovered last year still needs tending to and replacing the committee members would be foolish, as the current members have already acquired a vast working knowledge of the deficits and faulty accounting practices that led to the crisis.

“There’s an urgency to this because of the fiscal crisis we’re trying to get out of,” Ms. Graboski said. “It’s very important to do our due diligence.”

Last year, the town discovered that there was a deficit in the capital budget that totaled nearly $19 million. Since then, that figure has changed several times as the town comptroller’s office has determined how much money was actually spent.

“Things are languishing already,” said Ms. Graboski, adding that the comptroller formerly gave the board weekly updates on the financial crisis.

Ms. Throne-Holst strongly disagreed, stating that “nothing is lagging in the comptroller’s office” and that staff there is working around the clock.

She added that it is not fair for Ms. Graboski to judge the performance of the comptroller’s office because the councilwoman has spent seven days in Florida since the new year began.

Ms. Graboski countered back that she has never been “out of touch” and spends hours each day on the computer researching and drafting legislation.

The last line of the article is the problem with Town Hall. Stop feeling a need for "drafting legislation." They cannot manage the current laws, why create new ? It's OK... worst case scenerio is that our taxes will go up to pay for this mess....

So -- it was Ms. Graboski who could not make the organizational meeting scheduled for Tuesday 1/5/10, and Ms. Throne-Holst knew this on 12/28/09 when she sent out the press release posted with another article?

As long as the Town Council persists in ignoring the 2,000 pound gorilla in the room wearing an STPD badge, what difference does any of this make?

We have learned a little about the STPD's absorbent capacity regarding tax dollars. We know that there was a $4.5M deficit in the police fund, (whatever that is), but don't know where that money went. We also know the MINIMUM salaries of police officers which were published on the Town website but have no idea how those numbers compare to their ...more

geeeeez enough already, develop some intestinal fortitude and speak at the town board meeting. Blanketing every story at 27east with your propaganda and anti-cop rhetoric only reaches a fraction of your audience and is quite annoying. I think your feelings are more personal than material.
By politcal pawn (121), Flanders on Jan 22, 10 12:13 AM
Really give it up. You pay maybe $200 a year for the police dept and they work all year. You pay Thousands of dollars to your school district and they only work 180 days. There not around nights, weekends, holidays or summers. At least you get security from the police dept I don't see much from the school districts.
By lifesaver (118), speonk on Jan 22, 10 8:31 AM
If the STPD goes to 12 hour tours then they will come to work only 155 times a year, actually even less when vacation and sick time is rolled in.
You are right around the school districts, they're just as bad, if not worse.

Stick to your guns, Ms. Graboski. and keep on sticking up for the rest of us - don't let the new kids push you around!

And shame on you, Malone. During the campaign, you spoke intelligently. Now you're acting just like a little puppet.

we dont need a committe to help control less then 20% of the total town budjet. We need to find out who signed the deals 50 years ago for the
other 80% of the budject as mandated for pensions and benifits for teachers town, county, state employees, what company or business can after 20 years of work pay retired workers for 40 years more when it adds up 50,000 or more per retired worker for pension and benifits, we are doomed

27east.com: how about giving Ms. DiNapoli one of those cheap Flip video cameras for $100 [Ultracompact design; USB arm and built-in FlipShare software; TV output and connector cable; 60-minute recording time; 1.5" color LCD screen] and recording some of this and posting it on youtube.com and put the link along with the artilce--edit out the boring bits and leave this goodness for us voters to review. That would be some good cutting edge journalism.

Ms. Graboski's rant seems a bit disingenuous considering that she is part of the "Controlling" Republican town board majority. Maybe Ms. Graboski is feeling the loosening of the reins of former Supervisor Kabot and is finally able to speak without fear of retribution and is just striking out at the nearest target unfairly.

It is not about political correctness, it is about how our female politicians are treated differently than the men. "Cat-fight" has very clear and inappropriate connotations.

Ms. Graboski is talking out of both sides of her mouth! On January 12th she and her controlling team mates squelched resolutions for the docket!

She should go back to her silent mode since she cannnot control herself. What disgraceful behavior! This Board is not the ATH's Town Board, it is the Town Board of the voters of SH Town. Why would you say that Ms. Graboski showed disrespect when voicing her opinion? Everyone has a right to say what they want and how they feel.
In Ms. Graboski view it would not be good at this time to change the Finance Committee Board, these people are familiar with the town's finances, why change members in mid-stream. Ms. Graboski is also not in favor of changing the Comptroller in mid-stream either.

... the need to "be in charge" is the problem here. Forget all this party contol/ rule crap and attack the issues. At this level it stymies creative problem solving and allows candidates/officials to hide behind party "platforms" and not get anything constructive done. By Terry (380), Southampton on Jan 27, 10 1:15 PM
Indeed! I have no idea where that came from -- perhaps because OTB has, traditionally been the appointment repository for hack politicos whose previous careers have been cut short by the voters.

I believe that "Skippy" is now the County Executive's head of Economic Development. Thanks for calling me on that.

Thanks for all of your insights and comments on the forums here. I hope that the editors do not delete the following comment as a personal attack, which it is not, but I could not resist.

Go to the county payroll, check Skippy's deal with Levy. Then check brokhavens payroll, see the master money manipulator at work serving both parties so as to preserve her job. Both salaries are over 100Gs. Btw, Skippy, a TSH "conservative" candidate for supervisor, has replaced Ben Zwirn in Levy's gang of criminal democrats. The political mafia at work.
So, give credit to NG for surviving the big ugly!
