Serial Vandal Defaces East Hampton Airport Sign For Third Time

The latest version of a familar tag on the East Hampton Airport sign off Route 114. Michael Heller

A sign on Route 114 for the East Hampton Airport was struck again with the familiar calling card of what would appear to be a serial vandal.

A large black “V” was spray-painted on each side of the sign last Thursday, August 8, for at least the third time in recent years.

There have never been any charges filed, and the vandal has left no other evidence as to his or her identity or the message the “V” is meant to send, if any.

The sign is adorned with a rubberized decal depicting a plane in a distinctive style that has often drawn comparisons to Roy Lichtenstein’s art — though town officials say the famous artist did not play a role in the design of the sign. Previous graffito strikes have been cleaned off simply enough by town staff.

The black V first appeared in the fall of 2016 and again in October 2017. Some have surmised that the tag is the work of a TV buff, harking to a 1980s television mini-series about alien invaders, or a fan of the movie “V for Vendetta.” Others have guessed it is a V for “victory” — or, perhaps, a symbol of the more insulting V hand sign used much like an extended middle finger.

V for Vendetta, the movie about taking over the government...

Stupid act by a stupid person.

This is exactly how crazy and unhinged many in the anti-airport group have become. They regularly threaten to shoot pilots, sabotage aircraft, and create dangerous situations on the runways, but we just ignore them in hopes that it’s just words. This shows that some are now bold enough to start taking action. If the rest of the group was smart they would turn in those who did this vandalism and distance themselves from it before those same people become so audacious that they do something ...more

Seems like a bit of a stretch, no?

It was probably a bunch of bored kids.

We can hope that it’s just kids being stupid. But the same vandalism three times in 4 years makes that unlikely (kids graduate, grow up, move away). Plus the glue in locks, flat tires on vehicles, and bashed in runway/taxiway lights seem to point to more than just kids. Fortunately the new fence and security cameras on field will keep most kids away. Can’t be sure about the adults yet.

Just rename HTO the East Hampton Town Vairport. Problem solved.

@pacman: Right! "Vairport"! The "V" will then become a gateway greeting for those on the highway going to East Hampton and points East. Just like "Star Gazer" and the new Shinnecock billboard. ( funny comment, by the way :)

Is it a coincidence that a spoof article by Dan's Papers appeared also this week about the Hamptons Police Cold Case Squad seeking the "Virgil is the Frog Boy" perp? Locals remember that phrase painted on the RR overpass on Rt 114 in the '70s. Since most folks understand Virgil to represent the Locals, the "V" might represent local control, perhaps localEH who is so vocal on casting blame on others is the perp, looking to deflect blame on airport opposition. This theory is just as crazy as his prolific ...more

Talking about that low fence at the airport, it was sold as a deer fence. The designer of that fence has to be the most evil, sadistical person in the world. It is nothing but a deer trap. The public will be appalled and all those who supported it will be shamed when the first horrific photos or videos of a fawn with its broken legs stuck through the horizontal wire fence is dangling and thrashing from that fence. Law enforcement will have no choice except to put a bullet in the deer's head. Deer ...more
