East Hampton Teen Dies After Medical Emergency

Aug 6, 2019 3:19 PM

Erika Bueno, a 16-year-old East Hampton High School student, died on Monday, July 29, after experiencing a medical emergency at a carnival a few days earlier.

A GoFundMe page has been set up by Erika’s family to help pay for the funeral costs. As of Tuesday afternoon, the page had exceeded its $11,000 goal, reaching $13,115.

According to the GoFundMe page, Erika, who would have been entering her junior year, was at a carnival on Friday, July 26, with her family and decided to go on a ride with one of her friends. During the ride, she fainted and wasn’t able to breathe.

Her family took her to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, and due to her condition she was then transported to Stony Brook University Hospital.

“The doctors ran tests and tried all they could to save her life, but sadly there wasn’t much they could do,” the GoFundMe page reads, adding that the doctor notified the family that Erika’s brain wasn’t functioning, and the only way for Erika to breathe was with a machine.

“Now we are trying to give our last goodbyes with a beautiful funeral service,” the page continues. “Any donations would help her family out so much to make this funeral service very special for her.”

East Hampton High School administrators, including Superintendent Richard Burns and guidance counselor Julia Petersen, took to the GoFundMe page to offer thoughts and prayers for Erika and her family.

“It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that I inform you of the passing of East Hampton High School student Erika Bueno Guanga,” East Hampton High School Principal Adam Fine said in an email, adding that Erika suffered a medical emergency and never regained consciousness.

Mr. Fine informed the community that the high school will have counselors available if any student needs assistance.

“Erika was a bright light here at East Hampton High School. She was a shining example of a good student and even more important an excellent person. She was taken from us way too soon,” Mr. Fine added. “Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends.”
