East Hampton Ordinance Enforcement Department Faces Staffing Woes

East Hampton Town’s Ordinance Enforcement Department will be short a few employees this summer, unless the Town Board chooses to do something about it.

According to Public Safety Division Administrator Pat Gunn, who spoke at a board work session in Montauk on Tuesday, the Ordinance Enforcement Department’s usual staff will be down two full-time employees—at least for this season. One employee, an animal control officer, is expected to go on maternity leave while another employee is out after suffering an injury helping fight the wildfires that swept through Manorville last month. Mr. Gunn did not name the employees.

Given that Ordinance Enforcement is sharing an employee with the town’s Fire Marshal Department, there would only be 3.5 employees available for code enforcement issues this 
summer. And Mr. Gunn pointed out that one of those employees will be placed on full-time 
night duty, leaving only 2.5 employees to deal with daytime issues.

Last summer there were five employees working full time in the Ordinance Enforcement Department, he said.

“We’re working to full capacity,” said Mr. Gunn. “We’re 17 days from Memorial Day. And these are the facts.”

The Town Board recently hired a part-time fire marshal to help alleviate the workload in the department and to return the one Ordinance Enforcement employee the two departments are sharing. But it’s unclear whether that employee would have a seasonal part-time status or year-round part-time status, officials said.

Town Councilman Peter Van Scoyoc and Councilwoman Sylvia Overby said they would support approving additional staff, but Councilwoman Theresa Quigley and Supervisor Bill Wilkinson hesitated, saying they weren’t sure of the need. Councilman Dominick Stanzione said he would be “open-minded” to the issue.

more ordinance enforcement staffing means more revenue for the town and better quality of life. It's a no brainer, hire more staff to address the illegal housing issues for a start.

You don't want more money, you want compliance and no problems. You don't add staff to increase revenue, you add staff to get compliance and not have to write summons. Don't base the argument on generating more revenue.
