LIRR Train Project Coming To An End

The long-awaited North Main Street and Accabonac Road train trestle raising project in East Hampton Village is nearly complete.

Spokespeople for the Long Island Rail Road don’t have an exact date as to when the train will be back in service, or when the roads will be completely open and clear of debris. When North Main Street is reopened — which spokespeople said should happen sometime around November 10, but they couldn't give an exact date — Accabonac Road will be closed to allow crews to complete permanent paving.

The crew worked to install the Accabonac Road bridge on Wednesday, October 30. The bridge, which weighs around 175 tons, was lifted off the delivery trailer with a massive crane and placed over the pier caps and onto the bearings.

The $21 million project had taken 18 months to complete, including the installation of new abutments, retaining walls and drainage. The original North Main Street and Accabonac Road bridges were constructed in 1895 and are separated by about 500 feet.

Prior to the reconstruction, the North Main Street bridge had a posted clearance of 10 feet; the Accabonac Road bridge posted clearance of 9 feet 9 inches. Now, each bridge will have 14 feet of clearance.

Over the years, these low-hanging bridges have been the site of many accidents due to trucks striking the bridges, resulting in train delays in both directions. The engineers who designed the bridges over 100 years ago did not anticipate the large trucks on the roads today.

When the work is finished, the LIRR will have raised the vertical roadway clearance of the bridges with the installation of new single-span steel bridge structures.

There has been no train service on the Montauk Branch between Southampton and Montauk during this last phase of the project, which began a few weeks ago. Buses have been provided for LIRR customers.
