The Breast Cancer Research Foundation raised $650,000 at the eighth annual Hamptons Paddle for Pink at Havens Beach in Sag Harbor on Saturday.

The summer fundrasier was hosted by author, food critic and co-host of The Food Network’s “The Kitchen,” Katie Lee. The World Paddle Association-sanctioned paddleboard race supported BCRF’s mission to end breast cancer by advancing the world’s most promising research. Founded by Evelyn H. Lauder in 1993, BCRF-funded investigators have been deeply involved in every major breakthrough in breast cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment and survivorship. BCRF is the largest private funder of breast cancer research worldwide.

Over the past eight years, the Hamptons community and the Paddle for Pink event have raised more than $11 million for lifesaving breast cancer research.

“I come to this event every year because it helps so many women,” said Katie Lee, through a press release. “This summer, it means even more to me because my best friend was diagnosed with breast cancer recently. I’m here to support her by raising funds for BCRF, the highest rated breast cancer organization in the country.”

The race kicked off with 125 paddlers and special guests, including Gina Bradley, Jennifer Levene Bruno, Pat and Dawn Kiernan, and Sandra Ripert. In addition to the recreational 3-mile and elite 6-mile races, there was a quarter-mile kids race hosted by Bradley, The Paddle Diva, and several “virtual paddlers” who registered to fundraise for the cause online. A beach-side breakfast was had as well.

The Hamptons Paddle for Pink was co-created by BCRF Board Member Maria Baum in 2012 after finding paddleboarding to be a positive outlet during her own treatment and subsequent recovery from breast cancer. Inspired by both her personal journey and passion for the sport, Maria was moved to use paddleboarding to raise critical funds for breast cancer research.
