Congressman Lee Zeldin Prepares For Third Term In U.S. House

Congressman Lee Zeldin at Stereo Garden in Patchogue on November 6. GREG WEHNER
Nov 12, 2018 3:26 PM

After being reelected to represent New York’s 1st District on November 6, Republican U.S. Representative Lee Zeldin already has his priorities set for his third term.

In an interview on Friday, he listed several initiatives on his agenda for the next Congress that address infrastructure, immigration and coastal management, among other areas.

He said the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers expects to break ground on shoreline work suggested by the Fire Island to Montauk Point Reformulation Study, a project costing over $1 billion that will provide erosion control and hurricane protection along the south shore of Long Island. He also mentioned a few dredging projects, including finishing the Moriches Inlet emergency dredge, followed by the Long Island Intracoastal Waterway and the revetment project at the Montauk Lighthouse.

Mr. Zeldin also talked about the South Fork Commuter Connection, an expansion of the Long Island Rail Road that will add more routes from Speonk to Montauk, which is expected to begin in March 2019 and include coordinated shuttles to employment centers, as well as changes to the guest worker program to increase visa caps and reduce the amount of red tape for immigrant workers.

“They have to wait several weeks into the season, jumping through hoops to get approvals. That needs to be addressed,” he said about the current guest worker program, which is essential for the seasonal workforce.

Other activities on his agenda include extending the Victim Compensation Fund for 9/11 first responders and enacting a long-term reauthorization of the National Flood Insurance Program. He said a key reform in the latter would be to reward property owners for investing in mitigation on their own properties.

Mr. Zeldin added that he will push to increase services and clinic hours for East End veterans, as well as providing them with remote care using telemedicine technology.

As a result of the midterms, the Democratic Party won the majority in the U.S. House of Representatives, meaning that Mr. Zeldin will now be in the minority party as of January, after he was in the majority party during his past two terms. But this shift doesn’t seem to make a difference to him.

“A lot of the key wins I’ve been involved in were a product of working with colleagues on both sides of the aisle,” he said. “It wasn’t the product of one party—Republicans, Democrats, the Independent Party—jamming something through Congress.”

He explained that the Long Island congressional delegation has been made up of two Republicans and two Democrats since he has assumed office, so both parties have always worked together to accomplish regional goals.

For the upcoming 116th U.S. Congress, the Long Island congressional delegation will consist of Mr. Zeldin in the 1st District, Republican Peter T. King in the 2nd District, Democrat Thomas Suozzi in the 3rd District, and Democratic Kathleen Rice in the 4th District.

“The Senate and the House Republicans and Democrats, we’re all stronger as Long Islanders when we work together to find common ground,” he said.

Although Mr. Zeldin won in the district as a whole—beating his opponent, Democrat Perry Gershon, by a margin of 52.5 percent to 45 percent—the election results revealed a disparity among voters on the South Fork. Residents east of the Shinnecock Canal voted overwhelmingly for Mr. Gershon—he won by 65 percent in East Hampton Town and by 59 percent east of the canal in Southampton Town. By contrast, Mr. Zeldin won the most votes west of the canal in Southampton Town, registering 52 percent.

Mr. Zeldin responded to the disparity by emphasizing the need for unity among members of all parties.

“There are eight diverse towns in the 1st Congressional District,” he said. “The American people spoke on Tuesday, and regardless of whether they’re inside the district or not, they need to come together as Americans all across the entire country.

“Some people are all politics and don’t want to work with other people—that’s a very dangerous approach when trying to get things done,” he continued. “Regardless of party, when you’re working on the Montauk Point Plan, the Montauk Lighthouse, Lake Montauk, the expanded Long Island Rail Road services on the South Fork, all issues should transcend politics.”

Since being reelected, Mr. Zeldin has made numerous public appearances. His phone interview on Friday concluded upon his arrival to the Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School in Rocky Point, where he spoke to students. He said that earlier in the day, he visited Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton and Forest Brook Elementary School in Hauppauge. After attending a few events over the weekend for Veterans Day, he said he would be heading back to Washington, D.C., on Tuesday.

“I’ve found through the years that I’m just as busy the day after Election Day as the day before,” he said.

Then the Democrats should find a Long Islander that can do more than carry east of the canal.

They had so many good candidates coming into the primary’s, but went went the guy from Manhattan. David Calone was a more viable choice than ATH, but again the Sagaponack money made sure their candidate was run against Lee. East Hampton and Sagaponack do not understand Long Islanders west of the canal. Lee is a good Shirley boy. Tim Bishop is local, he stayed in Washington for 6 terms

Pretty sure criminals and psychotics could care less about gun control. But, I believe if you can limit access to people who have mental health issues it wouldn't be bad. Just a reminder that the assault weapons ban of 1994 had some positive effects.
By Fore1gnBornHBgrown (4787), HAMPTON BAYS on Nov 19, 18 9:21 AM
Actually, any drop in gun violence cannot be clearly credited to the ban.

If it didn't happen in 1994, it sure ain't gonna happen circa 2018.
By Po Boy (3146), Water Mill on Nov 19, 18 10:46 AM
"Following implementation of the ban, the share of gun crimes involving AWs declined by 17% to 72%" - Christopher S. Koper, National Criminal Justice Reference Service.

That the overall results were "mixed" does not mean there weren't some positive effects.
By Fore1gnBornHBgrown (4787), HAMPTON BAYS on Nov 19, 18 11:19 AM
Koper also makes note that the ban cannot be clearly credited with the drop in gun violence.

"there has been no discernible reduction in the lethality and injuriousness of gun violence, based on indicators like the percentage of gun crimes resulting in death or the share of gunfire incidents resulting in injury, as we might have expected had the ban reduced crimes with both AWs and LCMs."
Nov 19, 18 11:36 AM appended by Po Boy
Typical Democrat logic while disarming the law abiding...they don't care what the lethality of gun violence is. As long as it's not done with a scary black rifle.
By Po Boy (3146), Water Mill on Nov 19, 18 11:36 AM
Right, so the reduction in the share of gun crimes involving AWs was offset by an increase in the share of gun crimes using high-capacity magazines.

That sounds like a good reason for banning high-capacity magazines, not de-regulating AWs.

But don't pay any mind to me, I'm on record saying that pushing for hardware bans at this point is futile. Hugging your kids before they leave for school like it's the last time you'll ever see them would be wiser.
By Fore1gnBornHBgrown (4787), HAMPTON BAYS on Nov 19, 18 11:42 AM
Yeah, sure, let's just be done with it and repeal the second amendment and all semi-automatic weapons as 82% of Democrats want.

Brilliant.
By Po Boy (3146), Water Mill on Nov 19, 18 11:48 AM
I don't think there's anywhere near that kind of concensus. One thing we can all agree on, though: hug your kids, hold 'em tight, they might not come home tonight.
By Fore1gnBornHBgrown (4787), HAMPTON BAYS on Nov 19, 18 1:14 PM
Absolute Bull. Democrat Eric Swalwell recently suggested forcing Americans to give up (confiscate) their semi-automatic weapons...or face retribution from the federal government.

Hopefully the kids aren't involved in the statistically more likely knife attack.

I'll grant you that the first proposition is not a statement of fact, but of belief, with a contingency for the unexpected in the form of a second proposition. That second proposition is as factual as can be.

Democrats do the same thing, they wave the American flag, but yet they spit on it, kneel, and burn it. They hate America... and prove it daily...They have no respect for America, they're just like the dems. They don't want to assimilate and abide by our laws, they want to bring their crime and corruption here. This is part of the GeorgeSOROS/Dems/Globalists agenda to bring down our country.

They sure do want to turn it into the place they came from. The invaders have no desire to assimilate - after all, diversity makes us better, right (or some hog wash like that)? They wave the flag of the country they are fleeing and are supposedly "in fear of." It's no different than Liberals who flee the state they've driven into the toilet only to recreate it in another state and are incapable of seeing the root cause - THEM!

As a self-centered, insecure human, hearing people speak languages I don't understand makes me aware of how intellectually limited I am. Poor nonna. her language and culture will never resemble those reflective of the America - the country she fled to. She'll be forever chained by the limitations imposed upon her by the lack of assimilation to the norms of the country. Poor poor nonna.

Although different scholars view unprotected speech in different ways, there are basically nine categories:

Obscenity
Fighting words
Defamation (including libel and slander)
Child pornography
Perjury
Blackmail
Incitement to imminent lawless action
True threats
Solicitations to commit crimes

Some experts also would add treason, if committed verbally, to that list. Plagiarism ...more

The Fed taking a more aggressive policy stance in raising rates is indicative of a strong Trump economy, but it is being way too aggressive in doing so and is risking future economic growth and expansion. But nope, you would never, nor did we, see this type of aggressive policy under Obama's reign given inflation rising faster under Obama first two years than Trumps, increasing rates four times during Trump’s first 16 months in office vs. taking seven years to hit the same mark under Obama.

That's kind of the point.

Much like the Democrat failure to pass immigration reform.
By Po Boy (3146), Water Mill on Dec 5, 18 12:03 PM
Immigration reform had the support of two out of three elected chambers of government and included border security.

Where were the House Republicans? Refusing to vote on the bill to avoid going on the record by voting no, or giving Obama a win by voting yes.
By Fore1gnBornHBgrown (4787), HAMPTON BAYS on Dec 5, 18 12:36 PM
LOL. oh no, no no. Despite two campaigns full of promises, failure to overhaul immigration was Obama's most glaring failure. It was 2011 before Obama endorsed immigration reform. By then, Democrats had lost control of the House the window for Obama to achieve his promises had passed. Don't turn Republican disagreement on what reform would have looked like into the Democrat scapegoat. Tisk tisk.

But wait, where is Democrats support for the wall that would will given Trump a win?
By Po Boy (3146), Water Mill on Dec 5, 18 12:59 PM
It's almost like there were higher priorities than immigration reform in the first half of Obama's first term.

Regardless, a bipartisan bill passed the Senate and was ready for the president's signature, but House Republicans couldn't even muster the chutzpah to vote on it.

Not sure what the last part of your comment means. Was there a bipartisan wall-funding bill that I missed?

By Po Boy (3146), Water Mill on Dec 5, 18 1:10 PM

Mueller Investigation
IS THIS IT?:
Mueller’s comportment suggests a man who’s fallen prey to the same state of mind that warped Ken Starr—namely disgust over the people you’re investigating and a desire to justify the sunk capital. Even if the special counsel presents one hell of a report, Democrats must ask: was it worth it?

Forget your wall. There will be no wall. There is no need for a wall. A wall in unAmerican. Most Americans oppose the wall. It would be the lowest tech, most expensive way to secure a border. The only migration is that of those seeking asylum, and they are entering at the proper entry points, so again, there will be no wall.

Unlike totalitarian states, we have due process. We were built on the backs of the stranger, on those yearning to breathe free. Walls are antithetical to our national DNA. And God forbid, some foreign power would someday have to call for Mr. Trump to "tear down this wall". No, everyone really isn't on-board with border security. Some are simply more interested in border security theater and political talking points. Border security theater is what we've been involved in to this point.

What I endorsed, hat, was the referenced citation - you know, no differently than is done any countless of times on any given day - even by yourself. How you interpreted it, uh, twist it, is entirely your issue. There is NO REASON to question the veracity of the claim in the source given that the source of the survey - the National Border Patrol Council - provided the findings to the source - the Washington Times, and the source simply printed it. Other mentions by the National Border Patrol Council ...more

False. A wall system already exists. Trump's wall refers to new construction.

The agents could have interpreted it either as the existing wall system or new construction.

That's the points.
By Fore1gnBornHBgrown (4787), HAMPTON BAYS on Dec 14, 18 10:36 AM
Correct. And Border Patrol is in support of new construction.

Border Patrol is on the record as supporting new construction. Period.

That one Border Patrol is not the entirety, or even the "plurality" of border patrol. But you knew that.

Now find the survey that says the rank and file of border patrol supports new construction specifically.

I bet you can't.

And EVEN IF you could, what Border Patrol WANTS is not equal to what is necessary, particularly in the context of historically low border border crossing arrests and the number of unauthorized immigrants in the U.S. being at its lowest since 2004. One Border Patrol official, LMAO. That Border Patrol official represents thousands of Border Patrol agents.

Here is more on what Border Patrol leadership says:

"The designs were constructed to the Border Patrol’s requirements. “We look at things like aesthetics, how penetrable they are, how resistant they are to tampering and then scaling or anti-climb features,” CBP Acting Deputy Commissioner Ronald D. Vitiello said.

Did "thousands of border patrol agents" vote for him or something?

You're saying the statements of one's boss reflect one's opinion.

Is that invariably true?

I bet if you ask ten people that question, nine of them will laugh and the tenth will cry.

As for your copy/paste, there's nothing about endorsing new construction, just general approval of the wall prototypes as they were built. Womp womp.

I noticed you avoided the question, probably because the answer is obvious: no, bosses don't always reflect the opinions of their subordinates.

Sure, it indicates that the wall met Border Patrol's specifications, not that it should be built or that it would provide greater benefit than the costs of construction and maintenance.
By Fore1gnBornHBgrown (4787), HAMPTON BAYS on Dec 14, 18 12:00 PM
It's a bs statement worthy of no response. Every level within Border Patrol has been shown to in fact, be in support of wall enhancements - whether it be boots on the ground or leadership. This is the expertise that dictates it providing great benefit.

That soft under belly you're showing is that you Democrat's don't support border security, just border security theater.

Border Patrol chief urges senators to support border wall
U.S. News Dec. 13, 2018 By Patrick Timmons

"U.S. Border Patrol Chief Carla Provost on Wednesday told U.S. senators a physical barrier along the U.S.-Mexico border, not just detection technology, is crucial for her agents' fight against Mexican drug cartels."

By Po Boy (3146), Water Mill on Dec 14, 18 12:11 PM
Yes, I'm sure the appointed Commissioners and Chiefs of Border Patrol are all on-board with the Trump agenda. Which brings us back to: "no, bosses don't always reflect the opinions of their subordinates."

Still nothing reflecting the opinions of rank and file, nor any explanation of how popularity with the rank and file reflects a greater benefit than cost.

Exactly, "a" wall. Not Trump's wall. Not new wall. Everyone agrees that walling is necessary. The question of walling where, made of what, and how high are central points of disagreement. Questions which you deceptively attempt to portray as resolved by the survey you keep referencing.

Even you've admitted walling all 2,000+ miles of border is necessary, right?

American consumers responded to the attempts to rape-shame the Christmas classic song “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” by driving up sales of the tune.

The current controversy sprang to national attention when a virtue signaling radio station in Cleveland, Ohio, announced that it was banning the 70-year-old Christmas ditty because liberals said it celebrated “rape.”
