East Hampton Renews Plowing Contract With Steven Mezynieski's Company

Oct 11, 2016 2:20 PM

East Hampton Town officials this week approved a new contract for snow plowing at the East Hampton Airport, enlisting a company owned by Steven Mezynieski, the Southampton contractor arrested in August and accused of raping a 16-year-old girl.

Steven Mezynieski Inc. has held the plowing contract for East Hampton Airport since at least 2009 and has been paid more than $460,000 by the town for the service since 2012, along with hundreds of thousands in other contracts dating back to the 1990s.

On Thursday, October 6, the Town Board renewed the plowing contract with Southampton Excavation and Site Development, a company that town officials identified as the new name of Mr. Mezynieski’s company. The company’s incorporation was filed on August 10, according to online records, just six days after Mr. Mezynieski was arrested.

Councilwoman Kathee Burke-Gonzalez said there were internal discussions about the contract prior to Thursday’s meeting and the decision was made to renew the contract. “He’s got his equipment out there and he’s done an excellent job, and he’s there when we need him,” Ms. Burke-Gonzalez said. “They’re a company—he’s not out there driving the plows—and they’ve always given us tremendous service. In my view, you’re innocent until proven guilty.”

Mr. Mezynieski has been charged with first-degree rape and committing a criminal sex act in the first degree, both felonies. He’s accused of twice raping a girl, on separate occasions two years apart, the first time when the girl was 16, at a horse farm his family owns in Orient. Mr. Mezynieski’s attorney, Edward Burke Jr., entered not guilty pleas on behalf of his client. The next court date is October 28.

Mr. Mezynieski’s excavation company has long been a major contractor with local municipalities on the East End, as well as Suffolk County and New York State, for excavation work, the supply of sand and other materials and snow plowing. Southampton Town has paid the company more than $200,000 in recent years.

The contract inked by East Hampton this week, which is an extension of a contract originally won through bidding in 2015, would pay between $8,900 and $32,000 for plowing the airport property after snowstorms, depending on the depth of snowfalls. In 2015, the contract paid more than $158,000 for the plowing.

WOW so if he's found guilty will Ms Burke-Gonzalez still be pleased with signing the contract with him?

$158k in 2015???? The town shouldn't be paying ANYBODY that kind of money to plow in the dead of winter when the airport is quiet. Let's see the cost per operation on that. Absurd.

Business as usual. Public servants either too lazy to secure another bid or to stupid to see that it is a conflict of interest to have tax payer money go to an accused rapist.
By dnice (2346), Hampton Bays on Oct 8, 16 1:56 PM
What does a plowing contract have to do with an ALLEGATION?

Mr. Mezynieski is innocent of the charges until he is found guilty.

This is not news. This is gossip.

Y'all come back when he is sentenced and let's see if you feel the same way. The evidence is overwhelming and it is disgusting.

Anyone know how old a man Steven M. is? Is there a father and son by the same name, and, if so, which one is accused?
By June Bug (2680), SOUTHAMPTON on Oct 8, 16 7:20 PM
June bug, this guy is in his mid 40's. And he also has a teenage son .

"guy" is a more fitting reference than "man" as a real man wouldnt find himself in situation like this .
By toes in the water (884), southampton on Oct 9, 16 8:28 AM
Ok let's stop with the bs innocent until proven guilty. The cops don't arrest a local businessman for such a horrible charge and not have their evidence together. Only in East Hampton can someone with such a charge get a goverment contract. Totally disgusting!

I'm speechless.

When Mr. Bender gets out of prison they can hire him as a facilities manager. Everyone deserves a second chance, no?
By Draggerman (955), Southampton on Oct 9, 16 9:04 AM
Whether the guilty or innocent is of no consequence in considering the services he provides to the Town. One has nothing to do with the other. If I am not seeing the correlation please enlighten me.
By Bayman1 (297), Sag Harbor on Oct 9, 16 9:35 AM
Sex offenders and men that prey on young girls are usually viewed a bit differently than lets say a "white collar" criminal. But maybe that's just my opinion. There is however a code even in prison. Even the worst of society "draws the line" when it comes to kids. A bit hypocritical perhaps but the code exists. And I think people feel a certain way about this case when they have children of their own. Again just my opinion.

By Bayman1 (297), Sag Harbor on Oct 9, 16 12:04 PM
Then perhaps Bayman1, you are as morally corrupt as he is?

You can't see a problem with an alleged rapist getting paid with tax payer funds? You really should think before you post.
By dnice (2346), Hampton Bays on Oct 9, 16 4:33 PM
Haven't you answered your own question by using the word "alleged?"

Time will tell, and all contracts are subject to cancellation for a variety of reasons which might apply in the future.

Patience is part of our Constitutionally guaranteed criminal justice system, just like Second Amendment gun rights, ya know?

Patience.

Bender will be "rehabilitated" after his stint, so maybe he could head the drug task force?
By Lets go mets (377), Southampton on Oct 9, 16 6:55 PM
Why did he change the name on all his trucks some unmarked ones and Southampton Excavating? Not saying guilty or innocent, as I was not there either, but you can understand the concern, surely? We live in a neighborhood where these trucks are zipping up and down small roads daily. If the allegations are true, than the presence poses a greater threat as well. Yes, time will tell indeed. It always does.

The Town awards an accused child rapist with a big contract

The Feds allow. Child rapist to operate 150 yards from Tuckahoe school

From where I'm sitting, it appears that crime actually does pay.

Would it be normal to get arrested if it was a case of one persons word against another OR would there have to be some type of proof that this actually happened?

I appreciate that. I'm not making fun of anything just providing facts. It annoys me how people with money abuse the legal system and get away with it. Yes Scott is a nice guy but still why is he working so close to a school or at a public airport?
By Bliz (7), Southampton on Oct 15, 16 4:10 PM
Well you do have a very valid point in regards to a registered sex offender working so close to the school! And Blitz, I know U are not making fun of this.

I heard about how he became a registered sex offender ....So Yes, he did "make fun of something" that turned out to be a major oops. Theres a TV show "The Internet Ruined My Life" ..... it make me think of Scott...
Scott is a good guy...the other one isn't
By toes in the water (884), southampton on Oct 16, 16 9:20 AM
I don't know the story. But from what's on the registry it was possession and dissemination of underage material. Now I'm pretty sure to have the FBI come knocking you need to do more than make fun of something online. In this age of pop ups and redirection from sites it seems that for the FBI to get involved and be slapped with that title you'd need to be in possession of or send out some bad stuff.

So mezienesky digs up dirt and sells it. When he isn't digging up dirt he is raping underage family members and then bribing them with a Porsche to keep quiet-allegedly? He is connected enough to continue to work with local municipalities in light of being found to be lying during the permit process about his intentions with his N fork property and to stay out of the press
